When best to leave it to the professionals

Owning a property in Australia today is expensive and with so many renovation shows on the television these days it’s not unusual for home owners to renovate their property to save money. Though as many of us know there are some renovation jobs that are best left to the experts. Know your limitations when it comes to renovating and where possible seek the help of a professional. The following are always best left to a professional.

Plumbing

Before you think it’s a good idea to attempt your owning plumbing to try and save some cash be aware it is illegal to do your own plumbing unless you are a qualified trades person, but in reality, why would you. Feel free to change the washers but that’s it, so be prepared for your budget to take a hit should you need to hire a plumber. Before you go ahead however have a clear picture of what plumbing you need rather than half way through the job and have it all done at once to avoid further costs.

Electrical work

Same as plumbing, don’t try any electrical work yourself unless it’s changing a light globe. Electrical work can kill if you are not qualified so do not even think about it call a professional.

Insulating the ceiling

It’s not so much the cutting and placing of the fibreglass bats in your roof for insulation, that part is reasonably straight forward however the bats themselves can cause you to scratch for days on end.

Painting

Do you really want to spend hours and days trying to decide on the right colour, then trying to match the colour you have chosen with the multitude of options available at the paint store? Choosing white for the roof is no longer the simple choice it once was, as white is no longer just white but rather so many different versions of white depending on what you prefer its mind blowing. Manufacturers Dulux alone have more than 1100 shades of white so good luck with that one alone. You then need to decide gloss, low gloss, low sheen, satin once you have chosen your white alone. Then you need to wash your walls, sand the walls, fill in the gaps, taping and on it goes. Then there is the paint spray through your hair and some of your furniture you didn’t cover well enough. And don’t forget you are expected to undercoat the walls at least once but for best results twice, then you need to actually start painting the walls. Phew sounds exhausting but you forgot you then need to start on the woodwork plus the doors.

Wallpaper Hanging

Unless you have the patience hanging wall paper is not fun, matching the patterns perfectly for every single piece and hoping by the time you put the adhesive on the back of it you’ve forgotten where it was that pattern matches. Doing it alone is torturous, but doing it with a loved one is fraught with danger. Try it once and most likely you won’t try this again and if that is the case you will see why people call the professionals when needing their wallpaper hung so don’t feel alone.

In many cases renovating can be fun and can save us a tonne of money but for any the above items call a professional you won’t be sorry.
