Waste Disposal when renovating
Waste Disposal when renovating
Like many of you I have had friends or been involved in the renovation process myself, months spent planning exactly what to renovate, discussing ideas of how we would like the renovation process to go. Questions such as, are we renovating the bathroom, are we replacing the floor tiles, or wall tiles for example. We decide the renovation process is relatively straight forward so we will tackle the project ourselves. Often one process gets forgotten that we mustn’t overlook, that is the disposal of our waste that will accumulate quicker than we think and none of which our neighbours would want strewn over their lawn or we want pile up on our front lawn or the garage.
When you start to think about items or waste that are disposed of, think old kitchen cabinets, broken glass, perhaps plaster or insulation the waste can start to accumulate quickly so correct disposal is important. Are you going to organise rubbish removal services or dispose of the waste yourself. If you are about to renovate consider having an asbestos or pest control report to ensure your property is safe and the renovation doesn’t uncover further issues for you or your family.
I have put together some ideas that may be helpful to the waste disposal process just to make things a bit easier but again it depends whether you prefer to do it yourself or have someone dispose of the waste for you.
- Hire a skip bin
These are a great idea particularly if you have larger items that wouldn’t fit into your car to dispose of, skips come in a range of size and the great thing about skips is once the skip is full, you call the skip company and they will come pick it up and if needed replace the skip with a new one, plus they are responsible for the disposal of waste allowing you more time to get on with your renovation, plus the skip rental company takes the waste to a sorting facility so your waste can be re used if possible making this a relatively green and environmentally friendly option.
- Earn some cash- what do you have that someone else might want
You are already spending enough money to renovate why not look at making some cash back by selling some of your older items, you will be surprised who needs them, Gumtree and other online companies such as ebay can allow you to make money you never expected, perhaps you have a friend or relative that might need your older cupboards or table you’re planning to dispose of. Put the word out, rather than simply dispose of this waste, the extra money you make could help you buy the new tiles for the kitchen, that are slightly more than the budget you had set, think whether any of the old timber you might be replacing could be used for your garden.
- Donate
If you are financially comfortable well done but not everyone is, how about donating to those that really need it by taking it to a donation centre that they need to ensure workers are then when drop off is done. Ask them beforehand what items they accept and what items they urgently require you may be surprised. But if you don’t need them someone else probably does. You will also feel good knowing you are helping someone that may not have the life you do, but be careful with the items you plan to donate, don’t smash them into pieces then think a donation centre would want these items.
- Take the items to the tip yourself
If you want to save money and have worked out what to donate or sell and there is still waste to dispose, hire a truck and take it to the tip or disposal centre yourself, but try and save money by taking as much as possible in the one trip, though to make it easier you should sort out your waste for ease of disposal once there as there are sections for each type of waste, so save time and get the information before you go as this will make your life much easier and speed up the process once you are there.
- Contact your local garbage collection service
Depending on what council you belong to each one has their own service that allows twice a year pickup, so go online or call them and find out what waste you can have picked up and when.
We often overlook the impact of rubbish or waste when renovating however does not have to be a time-consuming process, it really is a matter of time and money deciding what suits you best
